Cold Snap

We’ve been having a bit of a cold snap here in Portland, Oregon.  The temperatures have been low for the greater part of a week.  It’s been mostly dry, which was nice and we’ve even had a bit of snow. I’ve been loving it, tucked in my cozy house, and on my little excursions to the back yard.  But I’ve been thinking about those homeless folks out there in this cold that just pierces through our warmest layers.  That’s a cold night’s sleep.

The lovely ladies (the chickens), spent a few nights indoors in a big cage in our basement, complete with a blanket cover to help them snooze. And they just got a brand new heat lamp to cozy up their coop.  Hooray!  It came at just the right time, after I had cleaned out and aired out their coop in the dry weather.  Now they’re all tucked in there with fresh straw.  And Nimbus grew her feathers back in time for the cold snap (she was molting).  No eggs these days, but we do have happy chickens, which is just as good.
