Garden Bed Preparation

I have been chopping down the blackberry bushes that live where the garden will be this summer. It is easier work than I thought and they seem ready to give up their place. We’ll see if they are as mellow about not coming back… I’ve heard it said that you have to dig up a blackberry root three times before it will stop sprouting.

There are sweet leaves from bulbs poking their heads up in the soon to be garden bed. They seem to grow bigger and braver as I delicately remove the blackberry vines from atop them.

I will lay down flattened moving boxes over the soil. Then I will add wonderful city compost made here in Portland along with some other soil. Our city is so awesome. It collects the yard debris and food scraps from all residents, even apartment dwellers. Then it composts all of this into various products and sells it back to us to pay for the program. And the city is more beautiful because of it.
