First Day

Today was the first day of our three day tomato canning extravaganza. We picked up our rented Zip van, drove and picked up the tomatoes (!), went to a lovely kitchen store to fetch our jars and food millls, went to the grocery store for a few last minute items, and came on home. Then we washed, quartered, cooked and sieved 40 pounds of tomatoes. After that we began cooking down our sauce.

Pretty good for the short day. Now we’re on a roll and understand how it all works. We thought up a few time saving techniques and we’re ready to wake up tomorrow and rock it.

Here are a few pictures from the day:

This last picture is of the pot of sauce cooling off in my fridge. It will sit there safely overnight until noon tomorrow when we will pull it out and continue to cook it down.
