Meet Solstice

Yesterday Solstice came to live with us. She has her own cage, decked out with straw, a perch, food, and water. At night it gets covered in a cozy blanket. During the day she has a full view of the yard and nice light. Soon she will venture out in the chicken tractor.

I learned a few interesting things about Solstice yesterday from her family. She was born on the summer solstice and laid her fist egg exactly 6 months later on the winter solstice. She is a great layer, laying one egg almost every day. She is only 9 months old, which is wonderful, because it means she has many egg laying years ahead of her.

She seems to be very friendly. She even ate out of my hand and River’s hand yesterday. Today the other ladies are free ranging and bound to notice her sooner or later, so we will see how that goes.

Well, we’re off to get our other new chicken!

Welcome to your new home, Solstice!
